Mathilde: Minimalist Linen Quilts, Made in Rhode Island
Quilts—particularly of the classic American variety—are having a moment, as Margot famous back in February (see Pattern Warn: The Great American Patchwork Quilt Comeback). As it turns out, it is not just antique variations that are having a resurgence: The quilt is also receiving a minimalist, fashionable makeover for the 2021 period.
Or so we have appear to imagine soon after stumbling upon the perform of Claudia Middendorf. A San Francisco native, Claudia studied at California Faculty of the Arts and RISD right before setting up Mathilde, her company of modest-batch, sustainable linen quilts, which she tends to make in her studio in an aged mill making over a river in Rhode Island.
Amid her (quite a few) inspirations: architectural information, coloration, journey (like sleeping beneath a down comforter in Switzerland, she notes), and the principles of wabi sabi. “Textiles invite interaction,” Claudia writes on her web page.
